The Blurb (from Becoming Beautiful, on Wattpad):
“Kennedy (Kenna) isn't known for her beauty. She’s never been complimented on her appearance unless being called beautiful by your family counts, and to Kenna- it doesn't. Sick of being ignored because of her looks, Kennedy gives herself a makeover but it isn't very successful.
After encountering a crying Marissa Rivers on the behalf of her obnoxious brother, Noah, she becomes acquaintances with the girl. After a chat about Kenna’s failed efforts at makeup and how she’s a nondrinker, she offers Kenna the help of her and her friends. Kenna graciously agrees but there’s a catch.
Kenna will have to be the girls’ designated driver to the next few parties that they want to attend until she can do her own makeup which may take a while but what happens when Kenna accidentally gets drunk at one of the parties and Noah has to bring her and the other girls back to their home? She gets involved in a lot more than she planned. And it seems as if all she wanted was to become beautiful.”
Wattpad is filled with a number of stories that hold the potential to be published. If you are a Wattpad user often times you’ll come across such stories with brilliant plots but are written to an unsatisfactory standard. “Becoming beautiful” is among one of those stories. This book had the potential to receive a 8 out of 10 for it’s amazing story line but the constant jump from past and present tense prevented the story from having a consistent flow. I’m no English teacher but we’ve always been advised to “show and don’t tell”. For example, instead of “the girl is already around 5’9” or so, and the heels boosted her until she was about 6’0”” “She said that her date is 6’4”, so it doesn’t matter much” the author could have changed it to something like “Marissa was gifted with long legs that made her tower over me and the heels only made her height seem monstrous.”
(BE AWARE! SPOILER AHEAD)
Aside from these adjustable errors I thoroughly enjoyed the book. (SPOILER ALERT) Though I would have loved to read more about Noah and Kennedy’s lovey-dovey relationship in the epilogue and the chapter on Noah’s perspective… I loved the story.
My favorite part of the book was when Noah had told Kennedy that he’d understand if she were not there when he woke up (I won’t tell you what happens next but that whole scene is my favorite and if you want to know what happens GO READ THE BOOK). The book consisted of a lot of ‘aww’ worthy moments and occasionally some humour. I really wished I could have given this book a score of 8 but hopefully the author will take time to edit it! However, this story is definitely worth reading because it kept me on edge and I couldn’t put it down without finishing it despite that fact it had a few flaws.
Also, thanks to Maddie Hardage for the recommendation! J
