4 out of 5 So this is obviously book 2 in the Shadowfalls camp series, and to be honest I was surprised when I read this - I remember expecting it to be complete flop simply because the first book was so unique. Looking back I think reading the whole series made me appreciate the plot line and character set-up in this book a lot more. It may not seem like really much happens in this book, but the exploration of the various characters on a personal level and their powers and histories etc. really strongly sets up knowledge that is needed in the next 3 books. Despite the lack of gung-ho action in this book, I thought emotionally it was an exceptional book and it truly explored ideas like letting go of the past and deciding what you want for your future, deciding if you wish to accept a challenge or not etc. So in this book, we are again not told what Kylie's identity is and her feelings toward not knowing what she is but being surrounded by people so sure of themselves allows a lot of doubt to grow. Let me just help your frustration a long a bit, you do not find out what Kylie is until book 4, well truly find out what her 'species' mean. That was not a spoiler and I won't let anything else slip, but Kylie trying to find herself and self-confidence is a HUGE focus in this book. |
But giving Kylie the most trouble is her aching heart. Gorgeous werewolf Lucas left camp with another girl, but he’s still visiting Kylie in her dreams. And Derek, a sexy half Fae who’s always been there for her when she needed him, is pushing to get more serious—and growing impatient, especially when Lucas returns. Kylie knows she needs to decide between the boys, and it’s tearing her up inside - but romance will have to wait, because something from the dark side of the supernatural world is hiding in Shadow Falls. It’s about to threaten everything she holds dear... and bring her closer to her destiny.
So now the blurb aside, this is truly a very good follow on sequel from the first book and really answers a lot of questions posed in book 1, as well as posing new question, ideas and feelings within the characters and the readers.
I found this book to truly solidify and strengthen the character base as well as enlighten the reader on certain aspects of more mysterious characters - Lucas *COUGH COUGH*. This book is full of personal revelations for Kylie as well, as family, romantic and friend problems get super out of control, we really see a stronger side to Kylie in this book as she has to put her doubts and fear away and really step up as everyone expects her too. This is the true turning point I think for Kylie in the series - where she turns from a pretty meek and vulnerable character, into a kick-ass heroine I still love to read about.
Read on for my next review of ' Taken at Dusk' book 3.
